The worm bearings are adjusted by loosening the big lock nut, then turning the bearing housing. On the 59 and older trucks, this adjustment is at the bottom of the box, at the front. On the 60-newer trucks, look at the top of the box, where the steering shaft (to the steering wheel) sticks out The second adjustment is the Allen on top of the box; this preloads the sector shaft that your pitman arm connects to. Loosen the nut a few turns to allow the adjusting screw to be tightened. Now slip your 3/16 Allen into the adjusting screw and tighten it until snug Looseness in the steering can be caused by various factors. But do not over tighten it, if you do it will be easily noticeable There are two adjustments - the big nut on the steering shaft end adjusts the end play of the worm gear. The screw on top of the box adjusts the sector shaft gear and worm gear mesh. If you adjust the screw without adjusting the end play, you're basically pushing the worm gear sideways in its bearings to remove the end play. This could be bad
